A simple computer program for calculating stress and strain rate in 2D viscous inclusion-matrix systems

Computer-based numerical solutions of geomechanical problems are important to understand the processes forming rock structures as well quantify associated pressure, stresses and strain rates. However, development such computer programs underlying mathematical methods commonly not taught in a standard structural geology curriculum. Here, we present simple program calculate stress, velocity rate fields for two-dimensional (2D) viscous inclusion-matrix systems under pure shear shear. The main aim our contribution is explain this transparent way, so that it can be used introductory courses on modelling geology. We governing equations 2D deformation same order style, still recognizable program. treat stiff weak inclusions any shape considers both linear power-law flow laws. calculations various scenarios. written with software MATLAB, provided supplementary material, also run freely available GNU Octave.
